Mother Of Dragons

Who doesn’t love Game Of Thrones? I’m a huge fan & Dany is one of my favourites. I painted this with Corel Painter 2018, using a variety of custom & new Thick Paint brushes, combined with different papers on random grain rotation. The new technology in 2018 has really uped the anti in digital painting, with Real Media & Thick Paint emulating traditional mediums so well its impossible to distinguish between the two. I find the ability to create my artwork digitally fascinating & have met so many amazing artists that feel the same.

Digital art is a very broad term for many genres of this new medium, & I feel the need for some defining categories. From graphic design, animation,  & character design to fine art, illustration & 3D, all falling under the term Digital Art, it’s understandable that people in general haven’t a hope of understanding the difference. There’s also photo manipulations- sometimes called photo bashing (esp in concept art world) & many photographers now offer photo painted portraits to clients…..but what does that mean!

Well, here’s what my digital art consists of- the rest I may tackle explaining at a later date.

I have a very cool computer, with a high end graphics card (vital for this work), combined with a Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet (like a giant iPad touch screen) that is sensitive to pressure. This is my canvas, with a couple of different pen stylus that have tilt, rotation & pressure settings that calibrate to the way I make a line or brush stroke as my brush/pencil/chalk/pastel. The programs I use are Corel Painter & sometimes PhotoShop, which have a multitude of different brushes which emulate natural media. The rest is pretty much the same as drawing in a sketch book, or painting on a canvas! Every line, & mark in my artwork is made by my hand…. the computer doesn’t paint it, I do. I don’t trace over photos or clone photos- it’s possible to do so in the programs I use, & many people do exactly that…..but that’s not how I create my art. I hope this helps you to understand, how personal & how much of my self goes into my paintings……I truly love my job.

‘I will be adding some video of this piece in various stages, so watch this space!

The journey

Explore, challenge, grow…..This is what I try to achieve with each piece I paint. Exploring new styles, tools, subjects….Challenging myself with composition, lighting, textures & subject matter, you cannot Grow without doing so. Most artists want to become better, & their work to evolve…Even those who create as a hobby, the satisfaction of achievement has no boundary! I’m still finding my voice as an artist, & have only been painting proffesionally the past year…(I worked as a graphic designer before I became ill a number of years ago & had to stop working.) I studied many subjects at Melbourne School of art, but graphics was the proffesion that provided instant income…& I had a child to provide for. This journey of my little sailor searching for the magic cherry blossom, comes from my journey…Where is my cherry blossom…Only time & hard work will tell. To my young & new artists, that follow me….Challenge yourself to draw/paint what you see, a 5min sketch can teach you so much…Dont get disheartened/frustrated…It takes time & practise, even the most naturally gifted artists need to learn about values, perspective etc. Most of all, enjoy the experience of learning…Be proud when you achieve something new. There’s lots of resources on the internet to learn to draw/paint from…YouTube tutorials, process sheets & tools like colour charts, & 3d models. It doesn’t matter what medium you are working in the basics are the same, value, form, perspective, lighting….Basics that are the foundation of every great piece of art.  If your serious, & hope to work in the industry…Find artists whose work you admire & are offering courses, preferably those who have the experience & expertise behind them, with good reviews on their classes….You don’t want to learn bad habits from an artist who doesn’t know the fundamentals. So on this note, go forth & practise, study, have fun & if your using my brushes…Show me, I love to see your work! Soon I will be adding a feature page & showing off a piece of your work each month. IMG_7174

Out with the lion & in with the lioness

Painted on my Wacom Cintiq 24HD Touch, using Corel Painter 2017. Cant tell you enough how much i love Painter, & we all know Wacom kick but against other tablets. Tell me what you guys are using tablet & software wise…what do you want me to talk about on here, its about as all sharing knowledge as artists. I love feedback guys, you can email, comment, go through inquiry page or even call me….lets get some great topics going!lioness

iPad for artists…who’d have thunk it!

I recently purchased an iPad Pro & Apple Pencil… after a lot of research (asking my artist mates)…as i need to work when away from my studio. Much as i lovemy Cintiq 24hd & Alienware i7, neither are particularly portable, & to get the equivalent i need at least $5000 handy….not possible!! So my quest for an alternative led me to Apple, & a handy app called Procreate.. i expected to be able to sketch, rough out ideas & then take them back to work on actual paintings…. but what ive found, is i can do so much more! Procreate provides a nice array of brushes & tools, along with canvas sizes  big enough for large scale output….while the 12.9″ screen of top iPad Pro with 256gb & the impressive, responsive Apple Pencil give artists enough horsepower to accomplish complex artwork with around 10hours batery life. Theres other apps -Adobe sketch, Sketchbook Pro etc but they dont quite measure up to Procreate..

I do love Painter & PS, plus my favourite toy will always be my Cintiq….but im very pleased to bring Apple along for the ride ☺

First sketch trying out Procreate, just mucking around with various brushes.

Openminds & progressive thinking at Mornington Rotary Art Show!

I have 2 artworks in Rotary Mornington Art Show, opening on Thursday night 19th. Entering my digitally painted pieces into this fine art show, i expected it to be rejected. The fine art world tends to be very anti digital art, the meer thought of it being compared to traditional is enough to turn them white as a ghost!! To my delight & surprise, my work was accepted…showing me things are changing, & that Rotary are very progressive & forward thinking. Dropping of my pieces to the gallery, i saw so much wonderful art….so im looking forward to seeing it all & talking art with other artists & patrons. Hopefully i will sell both, & a percentage goes to Rotary for the various causes they are involved with….this majes me happy, as i love using my art to make a difference. For those who live in Melbourne, the Peninsular is a beautiful place to visit…the gala opening will have music, food & fun, or check out the show for the next week. Cheers -❤🦁🎨
