Corel Painter 2019!

Hey all, I just received Painter 2019 on disk…. Inside was a leaflet & there was my artwork staring me in the face! I’ve been very lucky to have several pieces of my work featured in Painter launches over the last couple of years, but this is the first time it’s been used in packaging. Corel really celebrate the artists who use Painter, & involve us in many ways with opportunities to submit artwork for competitions, inclusion in new software launches & regular features on social media. There’s a wide community that can be found in the Discovery Center & Painter Factory, along with the usual social media pages. You all know of my love for Painter, in my opinion it’s the best software available for artists of all kinds…. nothing comes close the real media brushes, amazing papers & tools, we are only limited by our imaginations. If you haven’t used Painter, jump on over to their website & download the free trial….it’s 30 days, with all features just as if you have purchased the program. I guarantee you will love it as much as I do, make sure you check out some tutorials to get the full overview of this complex software. Painter 2019 is definitely Corel’s flagship aimed at professionals,  but if you prefer a simple UI that you can just pick up your stylus, select a brush & paint Painter Essentials may be better suited. It has many of Painter 2019’s features & amazing brushes that the hobbyist or those new to digital art can enjoy, with an easier learning curve…. you can trial Painter Essentials also…. so maybe try both & see which you prefer.

Here’s the link to the Painter website http://www.painterartist.com you will find all the links you need to trials, tutorials & communities, basically all things Painter.

I’m excited my art is featured… & my thoughts on the newly released Corel Painter 2019!

With the recent release of Painter 2019 last week, not only was it exciting to get to show off all the wonderful new features (I’m a beta tester)..but also some of my artwork has been featured in Painter software, on their website, in a feature video & also in packaging & users guide. I have been very fortunate to have work featured the past 3 years, & enjoy the relationship Corel & in particular the Painter team forge with their artists & Painter users. Again Corel have outdone themselves, with a beautiful, sleek & modern UI being the first thing that greats you on opening 2019, & once you work your way through the new brushes, & other tweaks it’s the increased performance that really stands out. There’s a bit of new content, with brushes throughout the library, a new Stamps category & some new Patterns for use with Pattern Pens, but the main thing Painter builders concentrated on was creating a modern new look for Painter in general… I love the Dark grey theme, it’s default when opening & really works with my workflow. All the icons, palette backgrounds, sliders etc have been optimised for greater clarity & easier use. There’s been some tweaks for Touch tablet users, gestures are really on point now….I always had touched turned off on my Cintiq, but I’ve now turned it on & finding its fast, clean & accurate. As for performance, you will find up to 50% increase in speed of some brushes…esp those artists like myself who work on very large canvas at highs res, with engine intensive brushes…. it’s well worth the upgrade for that alone!

Mother Of Dragons

Who doesn’t love Game Of Thrones? I’m a huge fan & Dany is one of my favourites. I painted this with Corel Painter 2018, using a variety of custom & new Thick Paint brushes, combined with different papers on random grain rotation. The new technology in 2018 has really uped the anti in digital painting, with Real Media & Thick Paint emulating traditional mediums so well its impossible to distinguish between the two. I find the ability to create my artwork digitally fascinating & have met so many amazing artists that feel the same.

Digital art is a very broad term for many genres of this new medium, & I feel the need for some defining categories. From graphic design, animation,  & character design to fine art, illustration & 3D, all falling under the term Digital Art, it’s understandable that people in general haven’t a hope of understanding the difference. There’s also photo manipulations- sometimes called photo bashing (esp in concept art world) & many photographers now offer photo painted portraits to clients…..but what does that mean!

Well, here’s what my digital art consists of- the rest I may tackle explaining at a later date.

I have a very cool computer, with a high end graphics card (vital for this work), combined with a Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet (like a giant iPad touch screen) that is sensitive to pressure. This is my canvas, with a couple of different pen stylus that have tilt, rotation & pressure settings that calibrate to the way I make a line or brush stroke as my brush/pencil/chalk/pastel. The programs I use are Corel Painter & sometimes PhotoShop, which have a multitude of different brushes which emulate natural media. The rest is pretty much the same as drawing in a sketch book, or painting on a canvas! Every line, & mark in my artwork is made by my hand…. the computer doesn’t paint it, I do. I don’t trace over photos or clone photos- it’s possible to do so in the programs I use, & many people do exactly that…..but that’s not how I create my art. I hope this helps you to understand, how personal & how much of my self goes into my paintings……I truly love my job.

‘I will be adding some video of this piece in various stages, so watch this space!
