Suminagashi- Digi Style!

IMG_6672This piece is the result of warming up today after time off work. Laying down colour & playing with brushes in Corel Painter 2017. The brushes are ones made by a couple of artists to use when wanting to create Suminagashi style pieces, abstract & can also be used in other styles of painting when wanting expressive brush strokes & a little freeness to your work. When this started to appear it really gave me the feeling of Aboriginal art, which is both graphic & organic & always has a story to tell. I saw some lizard shapes emerging & decided to embellish on that & added several geckos & made the background appear tree like. It never fails to amaze me how Painter emulates traditional mediums so well, its what really sets it apart from other art software. This was only painted by my hand, I used brushes & colour….In the same manner I do when painting traditionally. If you haven’t tried Painter there’s an option for 30 day trial, I promise you will find the experience to be truly awesome, & for professionals like myself a most valuable tool for your business.

iPad for artists…who’d have thunk it!

I recently purchased an iPad Pro & Apple Pencil… after a lot of research (asking my artist mates)…as i need to work when away from my studio. Much as i lovemy Cintiq 24hd & Alienware i7, neither are particularly portable, & to get the equivalent i need at least $5000 handy….not possible!! So my quest for an alternative led me to Apple, & a handy app called Procreate.. i expected to be able to sketch, rough out ideas & then take them back to work on actual paintings…. but what ive found, is i can do so much more! Procreate provides a nice array of brushes & tools, along with canvas sizes  big enough for large scale output….while the 12.9″ screen of top iPad Pro with 256gb & the impressive, responsive Apple Pencil give artists enough horsepower to accomplish complex artwork with around 10hours batery life. Theres other apps -Adobe sketch, Sketchbook Pro etc but they dont quite measure up to Procreate..

I do love Painter & PS, plus my favourite toy will always be my Cintiq….but im very pleased to bring Apple along for the ride ☺

First sketch trying out Procreate, just mucking around with various brushes.

Medusa Rising

Capturing the moment when Athena cursed Medusa, turning her from beauty to beast! Most of the brushes i used are from my palette give away, using Painter 2017. I tried a few sketches until i was happy with pose, then got stuck into painting her. Getting all my colours, values right i then moved onto the fun part, lighting & textures…. one of the new brush categories in Painter 2017 are texture brushes, they are brilliant….with plenty of scope to manipulate textures to wrap your subject not just lay on top. I decided on a shadowy scene, hiding in a grungy building as the rays of light fall on her scaley skin….. once completed i used a couple of particles to add the magic! Enjoy, she is available for purchase & will be entered in a couple of art competitions. For more details, or questions….im always happy to talk art, you can contact me through email, mobile, Facebook or Instagram. ❤️ 🦁🎨img_5974
